Get Ready For the Relaunch of VReel.net For HD Video

September 18, 2008 by sharky

Since the demise of the very popular video portal Stage6.com, not many sites have made a serious run at becoming a legitimate successor. Sites such as Veoh, Wuapi, Joost (and the like) offer a fairly decent video streaming service, but clearly not on par with the quality that Stage6 produced, and that’s High-Quality DivX. After taking a loss of "millions" per month, DivX® was forced to pull the plug on the project - obvious proof that properly monetizing an HD streaming service is difficult to accomplish to say the least.

VReel.net is set to take over where Stage6 left off, and is currently in the final stages of launching Beta v2 - likely finalized before the end of this month. Although comparing VReel to a “Stage 6 clone” wouldn’t be entirely fair - or even correct - as they’ll be incorporating their own leecher-proof media player, complete with superior H.264 encoding.

VReel Features:

Full-screen mind-blowing HD video up to 8.5 GB file size - what else do you need?

Community System — "Having a community will be a lot like having your own "Channel" on VReel. You get to select your own administrators and mods, and can set up your own community based around members which join your group. Members will be able to share videos through this system, based on your own approval if needs be. It’s important to us that the community system is "all yours" - you’ll have total control over everything which goes on here. You’ll be able to create your own themes and skin the community to your own needs, along with having a private forum system available to members of your community."

VReel Player — "With our launch of Beta v2, we’ll be rolling out our very own Webplayer. The VReel player is based around the highly regarded VLC back engine, and is being developed from the ground up to suit the needs and wants of our many users. The VReel player will contain popular functions such as the “desktop dimmer”, and pop-out player. This player will be native to H.264 - the highest quality codec on the market, while retaining full support for DivX5.x+, DivX6.x+ and XviD1.x+."

Presently most online streaming services utilize "Flash" as the backbone for displaying video, which doesn’t support H.264 very well, if even at all. The use of H.264 allows the online material to sustain the quality but at lower rates of kbps which equals less bandwidth, resulting in lower costs.

Proper Monetizing & Accounts:

As it stands now, accounts at VReel will come in three flavours: Free, Gold, and Platinum. Note that this is subject to change. Thankfully, the abominable "Zango" advertising has been removed from all areas of VReel - hence one of the main reasons for the delay of the v2 launch.
