Spurious ‘PEG Topsite’ Becomes a Tracker Reality

Nothing sets off the private torrent community into a frenzy quite like the mention of a new l33t secret tracker. Many will probably remember old news about PEG. Supposedly PEG was a topsite in the style of a TBDev tracker, where members received direct web/FTP access to the fastest and latest scene releases - ratio free, naturally. Of course, all of this was just an elaborate hoax. However, the perpetrators of this fabrication have gone on to create the real PEG tracker.

The PEG Topsite Myth

If anything else, at least the scene has a sense of humour. PEG started out as a tongue-in-cheek joke back on New Year’s Day ‘09 to see how much hype could be generated about an elite topsite that resembled a private tracker. Fake screenshots were carefully crafted to add credibility to the bogus site, even a proper scene notice was created to supplement the claim. None of it was true, mind you. But PEG Topsite had been born, and was received with skepticism, desire & debate - integral cogs of the wheel that set PEG in motion. Fictitiously, at least.

The same group responsible for the PEG hoax have gone on to create the actual PEG private tracker. Pioneer Evolution Ground isn’t open for public registration (and we couldn’t tell you if they ever will be), but invites can be requested through their IRC channel #PEG on irc.p2p-network.net (hotlink here).

NOTE: Be advised that PEG has only been online for a few days, and lists just 92 400 torrents. Don’t shoot the messenger - PEG isn’t great, at least not yet.

Ironically, the PEG tracker possesses some characteristics akin to its non-existent topsite. While users must apply for uploader status, this is probably the first tracker we’ve seen that is offering to pay uploaders so blatantly.

  • • Uploaders: "For all those users that are willing to become uploaders we will pay 0.2$ for each torrent uploaded. So, for 500 torrents you can receive 100$."
  • • Ratio Free: "Don’t worry about your ratio because we don’t care about it. But remember to seed."
