uRemote - A Browserless Remote GUI for uTorrent

January 22, 2009 by sharky

µRemote is a program that you can use to remote control your µTorrent installation on another computer. This can be µTorrent on a home computer from work or school, another computer in your network, or even a seedbox. While there already exists a native WebUI for µTorrent (and you’ll need to install it for µRemote to work) but unlike WebUI, µRemote doesn’t require an Internet browser, and can even be run on a USB pen drive - so it’s lightweight, versatile and resource-friendly.

µRemote - What You’ll Need

To be able to use µRemote you need to have:

µTorrent (v1.8.1) installed (and running) on the computer you want to control (aka. remote machine); and you also need to have WebUI activated. An example of a remote machine would be your home PC.

• On the computer you want to install µRemote (aka. local machine) you also need to have .NET Framework v2 (this is already installed on Windows Vista). An example of a local machine would be your PC at work or school.

Download Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 (x86)

Setting up µTorrent WebUI

WebUI is an addon for µTorrent that gives you the ability to remote control your µTorrent installation using your browser. You’ll first need to properly set up and activate WebUI before you can use µRemote.

1. Download the latest WebUI from the µTorrent forums. Or, click here to download the latest file. Rename the file called webui.1220503364.zip to webui.zip. Place webui.zip in your µTorrent’s %appdata% directory. [Start > Run...] and type %appdata%\uTorrent. Webui.zip should be placed in the same directory where ’settings.dat’ is located.

2. Open µTorrent, go to Options > Preferences, and click on the WebUI tab. Put a checkmark in "Enable Web UI", and enter in a username & password. For our example, put a checkmark in "Alternative Listening Port" - as shown below, we used port 8080. On the line below that, enter in your IP address (you can find that here). Click Apply to save the new changes.

3. To test that your WebUI is working correctly, open your browser and point to your IP address, followed by a colon, then your port number, and add /gui/ at the end of the URL. For the settings in the screenshot above, the path should look exactly like this:

http://192.168.1.12:8080/gui/

You will then be prompted to enter your username and password from above, and your µTorrent interface (GUI) should now appear.

Setting up µRemote

Once WebUI is running smoothly, it should be a snap to get µRemote working on a local computer. NOTE: You don’t need to have a browser window/tab open to your µTorrent WebUI (URL) for µRemote to work. Just be sure that it works, and µTorrent is currently running on the remote computer.

Download uRemote from http://uremote.blogspot.com. If you chose the installer method, we noticed that it doesn’t create any Start Menu shortcuts, so you’ll need to browse to uRemote.exe in C:\Program Files\uRemote\ in order to launch it. The RAR and ZIP versions require no installation; just unpack the files and run uRemote.exe.

The first time you run µRemote, you’ll be prompted with the same information that you provided in WebUI (username/password, port number and IP address). Put a checkmark in the box "Connect at startup" if it’s not done for you.

Once connected, µRemote mimics your µTorrent client on the remote machine (home PC).

µRemote Features:

  • — New torrents can be added by .torrent file, and by torrent URL.
  • — Can be used from a portable USB or pen drive (from the RAR or ZIP download), and your preferences are also saved on the portable device.
  • — By default, µRemote is associated with .torrent files (when the ‘installer’ method is used).
  • — Column headings (Seeds, Peers, Progress, etc.) can easily be removed. Right-click on a heading and select the ones you want µRemote to show/hide.
  • — Safe to use on private trackers, since the remote machine’s IP address is still the only one being used in the torrent.
  • — Proxy Support in conjunction with a pre-configured proxy used in µTorrent.
  • — Also works with uTorrent WebUI seedboxes! Simply enter in the IP address (or hostname) of your server; your port #, username and password for your box.
  • — Unlike µTorrent WebUI, µRemote lets users ‘drag-and-drop’ to add new torrents. To activate the Dropbox feature, right-click the µRemote icon in the system tray, and select "Show/Hide Dropbox". A blue square will appear in the top-left corner of your screen. You can drag and drop .torrent files to the dropbox, or even torrent URL links (great if you are unable to download actual .torrent files to the local machine).
