FileShareFreak Tracker Watch - January 09/09

January 09, 2009 by sharky

The holiday season is all wrapped up for another year, and it’s business as usual for private trackers. In this edition, TorrentLeech celebrates their 4th birthday; Funfile cancels their CDN plans; TehConnection, Torrent-Damage & FreeTheScene migrate to Gazelle; RevoTT adds 27K new members - plus, we have 18 new trackers for your torrenting pleasure!

TorrentLeech - 4 Years Young

Don’t expect a sidewide freeleech to celebrate TL’s 4th birthday, but they’ve got some festivities in store, we’ll update this post once we figure it out.

As of today, TorrentLeech is 4(!!) years old!! We hope that we’ll be here for lot more years to come, providing you always with the fastest and latest releases all over the world… We have some plans for celebrations, stay tuned and you’ll find out soon :)

Speaking of 0day trackers, RevolutionTT added an additional 27,000 users in 4 short days during their latest Happy New Year open signups.

TehConnection.eu - Set to Launch Gazelle

Yep, it’s true. TehConnection merged their entire DB to Gazelle and upload.php has been removed in anticipation of the transition to Gazelle. If you know how to get on IRC, I suggest you do so because that is where our next announcement will be.

For MIRC, type: ‘/server irc.P2P-Net.eu:6667′ or for a SSL connection: ‘/server irc.P2P-Net.eu:+6697′. Then type ‘/join #TehConnection’. Here’s a sneak-peek at the exciting brand-new TehC running under Gazelle:

Torrent-Damage v2 - Gazelle Edition

Also migrating over to Gazelle is Torrent-Damage, which was previously down for nearly a month. Finally, users are able to ’sort’ the torrents by name, seed/leech numbers, size etc. - something that was lacking in the older version. Signups are not open, and their invite system appears to still be down; there’s still no word on when members are set to receive invites.

TDv2 Features:

TDv2 has several new features, in fact far too many to list here, but we’ll show you the major improvements:

Enhanced Performance - the torrent browsing, forums and general navigation of the site is better thanks to a re-implementation of the front-end.

Enhanced Forums & Tags - the tags you’ve been using in the past have been improved and some new features have been added to make posting in the forums much more enjoyable. Two great features include an auto-sizing [img] tag, and now you can even embed YouTube videos using a [youtube] tag! One great new feature is a Preview button, so you can see what it looks like prior to submitting it.

Alternate Styles - you can go into your profile and choose one of 3 styles available to you

Sort by Seeders / Leechers - Finally it’s here! The ability to sort by seeders and leechers, a much-sought after feature, is now possible.

Enhanced Security - You can hide your stats from normal public viewing if you really want to by setting your Paranoia level

Ticket System - Instead of PMing a random member of the FLS in the hopes of getting support, you can now submit a ticket which can be seen by all FLS members, and you’ll be almost guaranteed to get a reply from the right-skilled person.

Additional Categories - Anime has been broken up into 3 categories now, Hentai, Manga and Toon (for cartoon style animation like Disney). We also have a new category for Mac applications, and we’ve extended the TV, Movies and XXX to include the various popular formats - HD, XviD and DVD.

Knowledgebase - Although not completely populated yet, the guides and FAQ are going to be replaced by the Knowledgebase - a peer reviewable set of documents in the form of a wiki. Not all users will be able to contribute, but all users will be able to make use of it, for getting help and learning.

Saw It Coming - FunFile Cancels Plans For CDN

I guess I’m some sort of a clairvoyant. Unsurprisingly, FunFile has officially scrapped plans for a sophisticated P2P model, called CDN (Content Delivery Network) which generated quite a buzz around the tracker. The internal workings are completely different from BitTorrent - whereby the plan was to set up a dozen or so extremely high-speed servers worldwide to distribute FunFile’s content via a direct connection; thus every user could easily max out their home Internet bandwidth, all without having to seed or be watchful of ratios. Here’s the disappointing PM sent to all members:

Many were skeptical of the plans from the onset, and assumed it to be another cash-grab opportunity. It appears they were right. One internal source told us that FunFile may have taken in as much as $100,000 in donations during 2008 for the now-defunct CDN. In reaction to the above message in regards to poor foresight into the legality of a CDN, one disgruntled member wrote:

Um… maybe Im just being a dolt here, but shouldnt the whole ISP/Legal aspect been thought of first. Id bet 99.9% of the people realize its illegal. So why was this given no thought until after the fact? Secondly, as quoted… "This mean were giving you what we promised with a twist. all those users that have trouble with troatling will be able to use our VPN tunnal dirrect to there downloading server to get there data all via torrent all shaddy and proper." So in other words… no FTP … we’re back to using Torrents which is what we do already. Just torrenting from a different server.

As it stands, and I quote a staff member at FunFile, "There were talks of doing ‘cost cutting’ as far as putting up (one) gigabit servers and calling it a CDN." In reference to a side project seen here, he continues, "This is part of the reason the site’s donation requirements are almost 5 figures a month, and why the mystical "CDN" setup takes half a year and around $100,000 to setup."

eBookVortex.net Is Back (Again!)

Down, up, down, up. eBookVortex is back online after some lengthy downtime. There’s 2,177 members and just 126 active torrents, so they need to put some extensive work into the torrent count to become respectable again.

On a sidenote, Learnbits.info has changed URLs to Learnbits.me.

ThePirateSociety Is Down…

No word on what’s become of ThePirateSociety, who have been down for at least 4 days now. They previously had hardware issues late last year that caused the popular torrent forum to go offline for several days before being restored from an old backup.

EDIT Jan 11/09: TPS is back up!

Cinematik.net Freeleech

From January 7th to 13th, Cinematik.net is offering a freeleech on all torrents:

As a little start of the New Year, we’ve decided to honor Russian Orthodox Christmas by starting a week of FREE LEECH! This means that you can download ANY torrent and it will not count to your download stats, only your upload. So downloading a film can only HELP your ratio, not break it! NOTE: This does NOT mean you can hit-and-run! Please keep seeding your files! Free leech ends Jan. 14th, 23:59 G.M.T. (give or take an hour or two).

If you don’t have an account, try one of the codes from this list: http://cinematik.net/adc-signup.php

FreeTheScene.net Goes Gazelle

FreeTheScene has switched over to Gazelle. Although the name "Free The Scene" seems to suggest that it’s a scene-releases only tracker, it actually has both scene and P2P releases. Signups to FTS are currently open (click here).

  • Members: 2,400 (5,000 Limit)
  • Active Torrents: 535
  • Categories: Apps, Games, Movies, Music, Games
  • Site Features: Some nice movie packs; Blu-Ray and HD movies; TV Season packs; all users start out with a 5 GB upload buffer & 2 invites; seedbonus extras.
