Those of you who’ve been anxiously awaiting the public opening of The Pirate City, today is that day. There’s been a huge buzz over this, and as beta testing winds down paving the way to open access, expect TPC to become a monster hit among online video streaming enthusiasts.
The Pirate City comes not without controversy. If rumours are true that The Pirate Bay is indeed behind this new video streaming site, it gives all the more reason for the MPAA to abhor them even further - something of which TPB is already accustomed to.
Aside from the striking similarities in website logos, Peter Sunde (aka ‘Brokep’) of TPB has long since denied any involvement during the beta stages. Early last week, Sunde told Slyck, "Thepiratecity.org is a scam. it’s not ours.". While an upcoming video streaming service was something that’s been tossed around at TPB for at least 5 months now, there’s no mention of Pirate City on TPB’s blog, nor is there any reference in their forums. Let’s not kid ourselves - it would be completely typical of Brokep and Co. to launch a site of this caliber, yet deny involvement for, well… obvious reasons.
As is the case with many other movie streaming sites, TPC gets most of its content from megaupload and other 1-click hosters. One cool feature is that Pirate City members are able to submit their own movies and links. Perhaps this’ll cut down on the dreaded "dead link" phenomena associated with many of the other video streaming services that don’t update the URLs. Other features include:
• Top 20 list of Most Watched Videos. (Plus ‘Random Video’ and ‘Featured’ links)
• Videos can be categorized by genre (comedy, drama, action etc.) for easy browsing.
• There’s alternative links to most of the movies, in the event that the primary source is down or deleted.
• Movies are shown in one continuous segment, not 4 pieces (or more).
• Movie plot synopsis via ‘mouseover’ for each entry:
• Individual user comments for each movie:
If The Pirate City is a blatant rip-off of TPB’s household name to generate publicity is true or not - or it’s just a cleverly disguised "right under your nose" Pirate Bay side project - it doesn’t particularly matter. The site is clean, there’s no adverts anywhere and movies are of good (even high) quality with working links. Forget about who runs it, and just enjoy it.
