Has anyone else noticed that there are far fewer leaked screeners this year? Compared to last year’s rampant leakage of screeners that made it to P2P, many of which were found well in advance of scheduled wide theatrical release dates, it would certainly appear that The Academy has closed some gaps in their security. While still early, trends clearly suggest that late-season predicted Oscar-nominee screeners aren’t ending up on P2P as quickly as anticipated, if at all.
Oscar Screeners Sent Out
Screeners sent out between Oct. 8th through Dec. 8th to the full academy include (alphabetically):
(500) Days of Summer, An Education, Anvil, A Serious Man, Away We Go, Bright Star, Coco Before Chanel, Coraline, District 9, Funny People, Julie & Julia, Nine, Pirate Radio, Star Trek, Taking Woodstock, The Damned United, The Informant!, The Lovely Bones, The Messenger, The Young Victoria, Two Lovers, Up, Up In The Air, Whatever Works, Where The Wild Things Are.
From these 25 films, only two have been released as screeners on P2P (Up & Star Trek), and both were leaked far in advance (Sept 2nd and 4th, respectively) of this round of screeners shipped to the academy.
This Year’s List of 2010 Oscar Nominees
Though unofficial, below is a list of just some of the film candidates that could be nominated for an Oscar (source partially from here). An official list of nominees will be announced on February 2nd, 2010.
(500) Days of Summer, An Education, Amelia, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Avatar, Away We Go, Bright Star, Coraline, District 9, Everybody’s Fine, Inglourious Basterds, In The Loop, Invictus, Julie & Julia, Nine, Pirate Radio, Precious, Public Enemies, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, The Blind Side, The Boys Are Back, The Brothers Bloom, The Hurt Locker, The Informant!, The Lovely Bones, The Road, The Young Victoria, Up, Up In The Air, Where The Wild Things Are.
Many of the films below have already been released as retail DVDs/Blu-Rays, while a few others are not yet out in wide theatrical release. Of the 40 films listed, only 7 have appeared on P2P available in the form of screeners.

Stats Compared to Last Year
Not only has the academy (so far) been extremely successful in limiting the number of leaked screeners. Unlike 2009’s Oscar nominees, not a single screener has yet to turn up on P2P that precedes the wide theatrical release date. Most SCR leaks have come months after the movie hit the theatres, with the exception of Precious and The Blind Side which were relatively quick in comparison.
Last year was quite an embarrasment; here’s a sample of 12 Oscar winners from 2009 (9 of which were available on P2P before being released as a "wide" theatrical showing).

While it’s likely that at least some of this year’s collection will eventually leak out, it may take a little longer due to the Oscars being hosted two weeks later than usual. Then again, it’s entirely possible that the academy has finally figured out an airtight solution for preventing the majority of leaks. Surely time will tell; we may require to do a major update on this post in a few weeks.
