Demonoid Set to Return, But With Heavy Losses

September 27, 2009 by sharky

Offline for almost two weeks now and counting, many Demonoid users feared the worst: here we go again. After a lengthy 6-month absence from November 2007 to April 2008 - Demonoid rebounded well, and dutifully reclaimed the top spot among private trackers (if you can classify them as private). Inarguably one of the Internet’s most prosperous & prolific trackers of all-time, Demonoid is poised to make their return, albeit - the news is bleak.

Demonoid News

Demonoid’s recent downtime hasn’t been adequately explained, aside from this message displayed on the website, which stated:

Maintenance

We will be back as soon as possible, but this will probably be a prolonged downtime.

Thank you for your patience.

The Demon team is usually tight-lipped concerning site ongoings; however, a new message has now appeared giving an update to the site’s status:

September 26

Status

The site will return as soon as possible, but there was a problem that caused data loss and the person who can help us get the data back is not able to help at this moment. The site will return when we can get his help.

A loss of a some months worth of activity including registered users and torrent submissions is to be expected because the backup we are hoping to get back is not up to date, so please be prepared for it.

Some Months?

Back on Demonoid’s IRC channel (open to all - hotlink here) - it would appear that Demonoid had a prior inkling to the site going down, and revoked user invites and shut down the signup link as well. As it stands, even Demonoid’s trackers are offline, which poses a problem for torrents listed on public torrent indexers.

We inquired about just how many is "some months" worth of data which could have been lost, but at this junction it’s impossible to tell. Staff refused to speculate. In all likelihood there will be thousands of new members lost; countless torrents; and any current statistics in regards to ratio will likely be reset to an unknown time. Not that ratio means a lick of beans anyways, but it will be sure to perplex members.

But we can hit you with this old info: As of August 30/09, Demonoid listed these statistics: total torrents: 283,606 (41,730 external; 241,872 internal). Compare this to when they come back online.

As seen before, expect Demonoid to rebound with only minor damage. Godspeed!
