The True-HD 720p XviDHD Blu-Ray Rips at IPT & PTM

July 03, 2009 by sharky

Back in November we reported that the new Blu-Ray rips (BRRip and BDRip) are in Hi-Def (HD). In fact, most of these are in 720×304 (or similar resolution), which indeed qualifies them as superior to regular 700 MB XviD codec releases - albeit they are still standard definition. However, there’s at least one P2P release group that produces XviD (*.avi) BRRips in true 720p HD resolution - beautiful picture quality and AC3 6-channel audio that will play back on some DivX/XviD compatible standalone DVD players, as well as game consoles such as the PS3 & XBOX360. For DVD playback, simply burn as a data disk - no converting, no transcoding.

Both IPTorrents.com and Pretome.net are home to these BRRips, and as luck would have it - for this weekend only (starting today July 3rd at 8:00 PM GMT and ending July 5th at midnight GMT), Pretome is having open signups.

"NPW" is an internal P2P group responsible for these next-generation XviDHD BRRips, currently being released at only a handful of private trackers. NPW has now joined Pretome.net in releasing their XviDHD rips onto their site. While NPW is not exactly new, we thought the time was right to introduce these releases since they’ve developed quite a following. A simple search for "NPW" - or better yet "XviDHD" at IPT or PTM will filter the releases.

It should be noted that groups such as DEViSE, PRoDJi, FLAWL3SS, SANTI, WHiiZz, BRZONE, BMB & D-Z0N3 are also indeed releasing BRRips; although the main difference is these are typically in 700×304 resolution (not HD, but 480p - standard def). NPW’s rips are about the same size, but done in 1280×544, 1280×688 or even 1280×720 - which also can be burned as a "data disk" and easily fit onto regular DVD media. Below is a comparison in resolution:

To quote NPW, "This is true 720p (1280×720) ripped from *.MKV BRRips/BDRips that are over 4 gigs. I love the new BR (xvid) rips that are out, but don’t like how they make them 720×400… So I have been making my own. I wanted the great sound and video that comes with BR, and keep the higher video size, so here is my version (which also can be played on XBOX 360 or PS3 in full 5.1 unlike mp4 versions that are only 2.0.) Check out the sample and decide for yourself!"

Finding a BRRip-compatible Standalone DVD Player

To find out which DVD/media players are currently on the market that will support DivXHD & XviDHD, we employed some simple filters from http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers. We added these filters (shown below) which generated 9 results (shown here) - many of which incorporate the Sigma EM8620L chipset.

DVD Players that "should" support XviDHD playback include:
