As one of the more knowledgeable computer users among most of the people I know, I’ve had a lot of people ask me how to download things from the Internet, or how to use BitTorrent. After explaining to them what torrents are, how to install µTorrent, how to find and download .torrent files, etc. - well, the whole process can be a bit much for some people. Especially for those just starting out.
There’s a new site called CakeTorrent (www.caketorrent.com) with the sole purpose of making BitTorrent as easy as possible to use for people who have never heard of it. Or just quick and easy for the rest of us. Searching to downloading is just 3 clicks from the front page, and includes a mashup of torrent search engines with a browser based BitTorrent client - so that everything works without the need to download .torrent files or browse torrent sites. Users don’t even need to install a BitTorrent client on the home computer - it’s that simple. And of course, it’s free!
CakeTorrent - What is it, really?
CakeTorrent is an online solution that pulls together two distinct services - torrent searching and browser downloading via BitLet.org. As a standalone, BitLet doesn’t incorporate torrent searches: users still have to download actual .torrent files and then upload them to the webapp, or copy/paste a working URL of a torrent metafile from an indexer such as Mininova or Isohunt. This in itself increases the overall learning curve of the BitTorrent protocol + BitLet, something that CakeTorrent remedies with the integrated searching. Simply search and download straight into BitLet - how could bittorrent get any easier?
How It Works:
1. Search for something on CakeTorrent. Click on a desired search result to bring up some options. Take notice of the seed/peer numbers and file size (to compare to other similar results).
2. Click the Download Now! link, the BitLet app will launch (requires Java).
3. You’ll be asked to supply a download save location…
4. Watch the magic of BitLet as it downloads your torrent!
Be sure to leave the popup window open during the download. Back on the BitLet website, the torrent will be listed. Multiple torrents are now supported.
