There are two tools that the average movie pirate regularly uses in his/her arsenal - IMDb.com, and torrent sites. You know what we’re talking about: cross-referencing actors, directors and films with ease at the user-friendly Internet Movie Database, and then head on over to Mininova, IsoHunt or ThePirateBay to seek out the flicks. Well, here are a few Greasemonkey userscripts for Firefox that facilitate the process so much easier, by integrating torrent searching onto a displayed movie title page on IMDb. No longer do users need to switch between tabs, type in or copy/paste titles into the search bar at various public torrent indexers - simply click and go!
For those unfamiliar with userscripts, they’re small add-ons for Firefox Internet browser that add a specific functionality to various websites, to enhance the look and/or to customize behaviors. To make use of these scripts listed below, you’ll first require the Greasemonkey Firefox add-on.
IMDB + Rotten Tomatoes Popular Torrent Search Linker
This one is hot out of the oven, having just been released today. The IMDb +RT Torrent Search Linker offers integrated torrent searching into two leading movie pioneers, with torrent search buttons that link to 5 popular public torrent sites (BTJunkie.org, mininova.org, isohunt.com, torrentz.com and thepiratebay.org).
Here’s a look at the script in action at IMDb.com, in which you’ll now notice the 5 torrent links appearing under a movie title:
At RottenTomatoes.com, the script appears similar on a displayed movie page, again with the 5 torrent links:
Does it work? Absolutely. When clicked, each of the 5 torrent sites were successfully launched in a new tab, with correct movie title search results. Below are the results shown at mininova.org:
NOTE: In all 5 instances, torrents are arranged by number of seeds (high-to-low) on each corresponding site, which shows the most popular results. If a recent DVDRip is released which trumps an R5 or DVDScr, it likely may not appear at the top of the list. For example, conventional mininova search results are always arranged by date added (by default), not by number of seeds/peers.
IMDb DirectSearch Plus
The newly refurbished IMDb DirectSearch Plus add-on script offers more than just torrent search links, and includes a search bar for IMDb.com via icons (Wikipedia, AllMovie, Rotten Tomatoes via IMDb-ID, Youtube, ThePirateBay, IsoHunt, opensubtitles.org via IMDb-ID, and Subscene).
Does it work for torrents? Yes. Both sites are accurately launched to exacting search results, and are arranged by seeds (high-to-low). Below is a look at the results on ThePirateBay.org:
BuyukBang IMDb Bar
The updated BuyukBang IMDb Bar adds an impressive array of functionality to IMDb.com. Not only are 4 torrent sites represented (YouTorrent [um, why?], mininova, scrapetorrent and Fenopy), but other P2P-related searches, including:
• RapidShare (DDL) searching — Via Sharebus.com & Rapidfind.org. For these forums, you’ll first need to be a member to the searches to work correctly.
• ED2K searching — Includes sites such as divxforever.in, divxplanet.com, osloskop.net & ED2K Rollyo.
Installing/Managing Userscripts:
After installing Greasemonkey (and restarting Firefox), you should be able to simply click on and install new userscripts, found at the Userscripts.org repository. To manage your scripts, go to Tools > Greasemonkey > Manage User Scripts…
A list of your installed scripts appears in the left window. Each script can be highlighted, then enabled, edited, customized and uninstalled.
