There are a few things you should keep an eye out for on the registration page. You need to fill in all required fields (I’ll mention below which they are).

An extensive, in-depth look into DT can be found on TPS (here), ETIV (here) or FST (here). Instead of rehashing over much of the same content found on that excellent review done by palnati in that link (which we highly recommend you peruse), we’ll approach DesiTorrents a little differently.

Site / Tracker Usability:
DesiTorrents uses a forum-style code (vBulletin), which consists of a unique "lite" theme/skin which is anything but ‘light’ on features. Unlike traditional forums that display a lengthy list of all forums and sub-forums on the main index page, DT makes it easy for users to find what they’re looking for, by incorporating "tabs" which serve as main forum headings. In fact, the DT website is divided into two distinct sections (Regular Discussion Forums & the Forums for Torrents) - whereby each contains their own set of browsable tabs (and sub-forums) for easy navigation.
Note about DT’s index.php page: In order to view the main sections (see above) you’ll need to disable "Adblock Plus" (at least) and likely "NoScript" since DesiTorrents uses Ajax for the tabs. Otherwise, it’s extremely difficult to browse certain areas of the site.
Maintaining Good ‘Ratio’ / Freeleech
All DT members are required to keep a global ’share ratio’ of at least 1:1. Fortunately, DesiTorrents always has a steady stream of fresh leechers (current S/L ratio is a very low 5.74, or 574%) thus seeding is easy!
Freeleech — If that’s not enough, DT offers freeleech (ratioFREE) sections on the tracker - all movies/adult sections that are Hi-Def are free, as well as music videos. Total freeleech torrents found = 536. As well, once the donation target is met for each month, the remainder of the month is freeleech for everything on the tracker.
Best time to seed? — Try between 2AM - 8AM, GMT +5/5:30. This is when India’s largest ISP - BSNL - offers unlimited downloads on the majority of their Internet plans.
Torrent Search:
This can be taken a step further by including the name/group of the "rippers" in the search query; great for filtering results to show your favourite ripper(s) throughout the chosen sub-forums. Other filtering methods are available; such as for size, date and "sort by" (seeds/leechers/user, etc).
Releasers / Rippers / Ripper Groups:
Home to dozens of internal encoders (referred to as "rippers"), DesiTorrents is famous for its continuous stream of daily torrents for movies, TV, music & other digitized media. Like most desi trackers, movies are a popular mainstay of the torrent economy and make up for an impressive 9,427 torrents on DT (which is 78% of all torrents on site).
Typically, "releasers" are the members who are uploading torrents to DesiTorrents. In some cases, releasers are also rippers - but often they may be part of the ‘group’ who are supplying the bandwidth or seedbox for initial seeding, and posting new torrent threads.
DT currently lists 12 different ripper groups, with each group comprising of an untold number of individual rippers & releasers. Some rippers specialize in a particular release type (pre-releases, encodes, DVDRips, music) while others are known for their regional releases. DT members that have something to offer - such as sources for DVDs/music/TV ‘cappers’; excellent ripping skills; or even seedbox access - are encouraged to contact a group/team.
Regional Sections:
One of the real treasures found on DT is in the regional sections, this is where it pulls away from other general desi trackers. Both films & audio can be found in all major desi languages & regions. For example, below is the torrent count for regional movie categories:
- • Bollywood — Known as the ‘Hindi Cinema’ film industry based in Mumbai; unquestionably the most popular regional type of release. DT indexes 6,551 movie torrents throughout their Bollywood category.

Movie/Film Formats - Types of Releases:
DT offers a multitude of film types & formats; and often a popular movie will be released in a variety of different formats in relation to type of encode, transcode, container, source, and other factors. Looking into DesiTorrents’ Bollywood section, one will find 10 different sub-categories (current torrent count for each is listed in parentheses).
DVD-Rip Releases (4,551) — By far the most popular movie section in Bollywood. This needs little explanation; these are XviD/x264 rips from original DVD5/9’s, and BDRip/BRRip releases are also allowed.
Pre-Releases (1,028) — The second-most popular section; Pre-releases are highly sought out - and aside from CAMs, these are the first available sources for good video/audio quality found in a release. All other containers, rip formats & sources that originate from a ‘pre-release’ are included here (pDVDRip, pDVDR, CCE from pDVD, XviD, x264, CAMs, etc).
Encoded DVD5 (379) — Encoded versions of retail DVD9’s using M/CCE, MHCE or HC_Enc - in laymen’s terms, this is a DVD9 that have been shrunken down to the size of a DVD5, without a loss in video/audio quality. Certain DVD ‘extras’ will often be stripped out to keep the size down. These releases are usually found in VOB container (VIDEO_TS) and are thus ready-to-burn to a 4.38GB DVD5 disc.
Untouched DVDs (272) — Includes both DVD5/DVD9 untouched DVDRs, mostly in original DVD file structure (VIDEO_TS / VOB container). These are considered "retail".
Upscaled Releases (193) — These are upscaled from a DVD9 source, and are normally using the x264 codec and MKV container in 720p resolution.
xVCD Releases (115) — These are VCD releases (SVCD, VCD, CVD, MVCD & KVCD) of original movies, mostly older films. Generally these are in AVSEQ01.DAT format and are often taken from a VHSRip source.
DVD Extras (10) — These are somewhat rare; includes DVD bonus discs, deleted scenes and even music.
Encoded DVD9 (9) — Similar to Encoded DVD5, these are usually the same size as the source DVD9 but are encoded to add subtitles or remaster the release. In rare cases the ’source’ may even include a Blu-Ray, shrunken to fit onto a DVD9.
Transcoded DVD5 (6) — These releases can be DVD9 > DVD5 transcodes (with VOB files/untouched). Not a popular format; users will opt for encoded or untouched DVD5/DVD9 instead.
CAM Releases (0) — This section is now closed; all CAMs can be found in Pre-release.

DesiTorrents - Extras:
Not exclusively about movies, DT also has 16 different torrent sub-forums for music (which includes 3,600+ torrents, including 1,000+ OSTs); 6 sub-forums for TV shows; 7 for adult/xxx releases; and various "misc" categories which include sports, comics, documentaries, kids, ebooks & mags.
Torrents aside, DT has a thriving community in the Chai Time & General forum areas, which includes topics for chatting about everything & anything. Other site features include online Poker (yes - members play for real money, not credits), a desi radio program exclusive to DT, a special DT Toolbar (to enhance searching), as well as other features unseen elsewhere.
Security:
DesiTorrents is the only desi tracker that supports anonymous releases. This means that DT members are able to post anonymously so their identity is secure. Privacy on the site is paramount; and security to their releasers (uploaders) is DT’s main focus.
DT is also the only desi tracker where members can force HTTPS (SSL) on the site.
…Final Thoughts
With Bollywood finally receiving long-overdue accolades at an international level, the desi movie industry has proven itself to become a major player. For film buffs, adding a good desi tracker to your list of movie trackers will not only broaden your film collection (and open your eyes to a new world of great films), but there’s also a fairly decent selection of localized ’scene releases’ that don’t make it onto most typical trackers. In terms of content & community, DT is hard to beat.
DesiTorrents is not only pleasant to look at, but it’ll change your opinion about trackers that use a forum for the codebase - it all comes together nicely at DT. Simply put, DT is the net’s best all-around desi tracker - it’s one account that I won’t part with anytime soon.
