Wunza - The Rebirth of a Movie Tracker

January 13, 2010 by sharky

The new Wunza.ws is certainly a movie tracker to watch out for; forget everything you thought you ever knew about this Gazelle-based tracker. New staff, new coders, new IRC guru - Wunza packs some impressive features unseen elsewhere. Reopening as Wunza v2 merely two weeks ago after undergoing a complete overhaul of the design & features; signups are open - but only for a few more days.

UPDATE 1:   Wunza will be a ratio-free tracker as of Feb. 1st 2010.
UPDATE 2: (01/25/2010)   Registration will remain open until 6,500 members have been reached (just 400+ slots left)

Registration is currently open; but scheduled to end this Friday, January 15th. Signups are automatic, which means you won’t have to wait for a confirmation email - simply signup and proceed to login.

After that, it’s ‘invite only’ - although we’ve been informed there may be an online application form (similar to PTN) and/or an IRC #invite alternative.

Wunza Features:

Dual ‘Torrent Browse’ Views

One major improvement to Wunza is in the versatility of how torrents are displayed. By default, Wunza features an "IMDb view" of torrents listed on the site (see below) which can be switched back to "Classic" for those who prefer a standard browse page.

Diverse Content

While the number of torrents may appear a little low for now (at 366), more than 70 new torrents have been uploaded in the past 24 hours - mostly thanks to a cool new AutoUpload script created by staff. Essentially what this script does is download stuff from an FTP (for example, a scene FTP), and it will then make a .torrent file, upload it to the site, and inject (parse) IMDb info into the release (movie poster, director, plot summary, etc) and announce the new torrent in Wunza’s IRC - all of which is done automatically.

Scene & Retro — Wunza has at least two dedicated uploaders (and a third one coming in soon) with ’scene access’ so expect to find the latest releases. But in addition to the newest movies, Wunza is also inclined towards retro and hard-to-find films.

Formats & Uploading — All members are permitted to upload both scene & non-scene/P2P releases. Allowed formats include everything and anything (HD, XviD, BluRay, DVDR).

Freeleech — Everything on the tracker remains to be freeleech - with the notion that Wunza may evolve into a ratio-free tracker.

Other Features:

Voting — Incorporates a unique movie voting system (from 0.1 to 5.0 out of 5 stars).

NEW! ‘IRC Idle’ Points — Site points (bonus) can be earned from idling in Wunza’s IRC channel.

Bonus Points — Points can be earned for seeding, voting (1 point per vote) and uploading torrents (20 points each) which can be "shopped" in the online store or used to play games.

Our Commentary:

Wunza is quickly evolving into one of BitTorrent’s best-kept secrets. If Wunza can keep up the torrid pace for new torrents being added, they’ll be a movie tracker to compete with any other in no time at all. Nearly everything is hosted on a seedbox; staff is friendly; and an exclusive Browse page that we’re sure you’ll enjoy - all of which suggests a winning combination.
