New Torrent Ideas - 10 Brand-New BitTorrent Projects

February 10, 2009 by sharky

Here at FSF, we’re always on the lookout for the next big BitTorrent idea. From the latest hot new trackers to the discovery of torrent utilities & online services, we try to cover it all. Here we present you with 10 new & exciting BitTorrent projects that are currently underway: BitSmash, Top-Trackers, BirdTorrent, FreeTorrentHosting, MinTorrent, TorrentPump, FreshTorrents, Torrentshare, SpaTorrent and TorrentHub. Enjoy the read!

The BitSmash Project

Update: Feb. 23/09 - Unfortunately, the BitSmash project has been retired.

BitSmash.com is a centralized statistics and research project for BitTorrent, primarily for public trackers and their torrents. How it works: BitSmash collects stats from the trackers of a given torrent (i.e. "tracker.thepiratebay.org" - not the public site that is it hosted on). Users may enter a torrent name (or release name, such as "Outlander"), and BitSmash will show tracker stats for the most popular torrents; and results can be sorted by number of downloads, seeders and health (combination of seeds & peers).

Magnet Links: Torrent ‘magnet links’ can also be entered into a search; results will be specific to a particular torrent. On many torrent sites, you’ll notice a "magnet link" download option. If you copy/paste the magnet link (URI) into the BitSmash search, BitSmash will produce the public trackers, detailed statistics, and the available torrent download locations - specific only to that torrent.

Say, for example, that Mininova shut down today. While the database of torrents that Mininova hosted would be gone, the torrents are still very much alive and well on the BitTorrent network, because of the public trackers. Since Mininova is mostly just an indexer, and only uses its tracker for their "Featured torrents" section (aka ‘legal torrents’), the loss of Mininova would have little impact on the BitTorrent world (aside from seed/peer numbers, and even these would all but rebound completely through other sites). However, if ThePirateBay were to close up, it would affect most of Mininova’s torrents tremendously (and the entire public community), because TPB runs the largest tracker in the world. BitSmash can provide alternative download spots for a torrent, as well as additional trackers - in the event that a torrent indexer or tracker goes offline.

Features: Searching (torrent name, torrent URL, magnet link, release name); tracker index; maps; API search; seed/peer/download stats; history & blacklist. Really, there’s too much to explain what info BitSmash can provide - if you’re a torrent geek, go check it out.

Top-Trackers.com

Top-Trackers.com is an exciting new private tracker indexer, brought to us by the torrent forum at http://tracker-invites.us. Top-Trackers is just that: Users can submit, rate and comment on private trackers - the one with the highest vote count is presented at the top of the list. While the site is absolutely brand-new, there’s only 35 trackers currently listed. Tracker info consists of:

  • • Open or closed signups (although this is not ‘live’ info).
  • • Tracker country of origin (or hosting location).
  • • Torrent categories (appz, movies, games, etc.)
  • • List of user comments for each.

BirdTorrent for Songbird

Anthony Hughes, the developer behind BirdTorrent has finally worked out most of the major kinks in his latest version 0.5.0 (released Feb. 6th, 09). BirdTorrent is an addon for Songbird that allow users to search for, find and download torrents directly into their music libraries - all from the Songbird media player. There’s still some bugs, so look for a 0.6.0 version soon.

As OpenBostonMedia reported, "Hughes has indicated his goal for Birdtorrent is to make music downloads as easy to manage in Songbird as iTunes music store downloads are in iTunes. (Of course, neither Apple, nor EMI, nor Sony, nor Warner will be taking any money out of your wallet when you use Birdtorrent)".

FreeTorrentHosting.info

FreeTorrentHosting allows users to share their torrents online with anyone! Simply upload your torrent, and share the URL link with whom you wish. [TIP: It helps if you seed your torrent - i.e. create the .torrent file in uTorrent, and add public tracker(s) to the list]. Here’s a few:

  • http://tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
  • http://tracker.prq.to/announce
  • http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce

NOTE: The "Maximum filesize" is 1 MB, but remember - this is a .torrent file (all others are not allowed). You’ll be hard pressed to generate or find an actual torrent file larger than this. Also note: If you’re using above public trackers in the list, it takes time for them to update the torrent.

MinTorrent.se

Another free torrent hosting service that recently launched is MinTorrent.se. It’s a Nordic site, so brush up on your Swedish first. Either that, or use Google’s translating service to get the gist - here’s the link. However, it won’t really help since you’ll need to login to MinTorrent, which isn’t easily translated online. We assume you’ll figure it out with a few trial-and-error translations.

TIP: Translate their "Hjälp" (Help) link - or click here.

MinTorrent Says: "With the help of mintorrent.se, you can very quickly and easily harness the power of bittorrent to transfer many small and large files to one or more persons. You need to fill in "something" in the tracker field, but do not worry about any other settings where this is set automatically when the upload."

TorrentPump.com

We have no idea where TorrentPump came from, but they came. They’re off the hook! Why it’s so popular, we could only speculate - err, actually we can’t. When searching, it links you to other pages, and then other pages - this, like, umm, like totally blows. Obviously popular among the 11-16 demography - can somebody please clue me in to this recent popularity at TorrentPump? WTF am I missing here? I’m not kidding.

FreshTorrents

FreshTorrents is a small application for Linux that allows you to browse for popular torrents. It provides you with an alternative view on popular, cheap (bandwidth-wise) and new torrents giving you infinite filtering freedom. You can find new torrents with an high amount of seeders/leechers. The weighing of what is important to you (number of seeders, number of leechers, age) is in your hands.

TorrentShare.pl

TorrentShare.pl is a new online torrent utility, billed as the Internet’s first free 1-Click torrent-hoster, file-hoster and seedbox service - all rolled into one. Users can host their files with TorrentShare, where a DDL (direct download link) and a .torrent file is generated; both of which can be shared with anyone. Completely browser-based, there’s no software to install and the created DDL and torrent links are not announced.

CAVEAT: At present time, we do not recommend you sign up for a paid service. (Check their forums, you’ll see why). FSF signed up for their "48 hour" plan for € 3 (Euro) and we were unable to use the account whatsoever. This was two weeks ago, and we still haven’t heard back from the owner.

SpaTorrent.com

SpaTorrent.com is a new Spanish public torrent indexer, but even has eD2k links for many of its offerings. The site is entirely graphic - there’s no actual text listing for releases, just screenshots that link to a download page. Get your AdBlock+ FireFox plugin ready - you’ll need it.

TorrentHub.org

If there’s one thing that the Internet is not lacking in, it’s public torrent indexers. However, TorrentHub.org does look extremely promising for such a new site. At last check, the categories didn’t work, and neither did the search. We’ll update this once they get it all fixed.
