DidItLeak Lives On - New Music Leak Sites Fill The Void

June 23, 2010 by sharky

The once-popular music leak blog DidItLeak.co.uk domain is set to disappear in a couple of days, bringing down with it the legacy of a pioneering and extremely brave frontman. The late Alan Carton was the mastermind behind DidItLeak - a popular blog (that evolved into a very prosperous Twitter @diditleak) which entertained readers with endless tipoffs for music releases that came out on P2P in advance of street dates. And popular it was!

Despite the fact that Alan’s last Twitter post was back on January 5th, 2010 (a millenium ago in Twitter-time) - today it still boasts an amazing 10,975 followers. Over an 18 month run DidItLeak managed to pump out 888 tweets, with even more earlier releases listed within the main website before a Twitter account was smartly incorporated into the operation.

On a more personal note — I had some ongoing (albeit intermittent) online contact with Alan Carton beginning back in 2008 until mid-2009. At one point FSF ran an article on DidItLeak back in September ‘08 which contains a partial informal interview with Alan. Not once throughout our correspondence did he allude to being terminally ill, but he was. Perhaps this article (the one you’re reading now) is nearly six-months overdue, but there’s no way I can top the heartfelt true story posted by VillageVoice - The Life and Death of Alan Carton, 23…

Evidently, DidItLeak.co.uk is coming to an end on June 26th; the final chapter for this archive of leaked music on the interwebs. While DIL will be no more, there are (at least) two new music leak blogs that have launched recently to continue the legacy. All it takes is a few connections, some tips and a little devotion to keep the leaks going. Here’s what’s new.
