VCDQ.com is Reborn - A PreDB With Amazing Extras

May 26, 2010 by sharky

Forget what you thought you knew about pre-database sites. VCDQ.com - easily the Internet’s most popular and longest running preDB/dupechecker - received a major overhaul recently. Gone are the usual drab, boring lists of endless releases - VCDQ has been revamped into what could quite possibly be the Net’s best media-related database for both P2P and scene releases.

What’s New at VCDQ:

Everything is new, that’s what. While very much officially still in beta, VCDQ has undergone a slew of new changes.

Categories & Top-Filters

The first row above (Movies, TV-Shows, PC-Games) indicates browsable release categories (the VCDQ homepage automatically displays ‘ Movies’). The Top-Filter row is used for sorting each main category by way of their own set of filters (XViD, x264, DVDR).

Media Info & Extras

Clicking into a release name will bring you a wealth of scraped info from multiple sources. Info such as IMDb links & rating, NFO files (view as image or original source), plot summary, cast, title, release date (and title), runtime, etc are included. Often a movie/TV poster and sample screenshots will accompany the release (screenshots are automatically taken from the sample, then the sample deleted); this area may be expanded soon to include trailers.

P2P Releases

As P2P releases continue to increase in popularity, it’s only fitting that an indexing site should list them - and that’s exactly what VCDQ does. However, not all P2P makes it here, just popular stuff or when the scene got "beat" - it’s a compromise that most people can handle and it prevents the site from getting spammed by loads of P2P reencodes.

Release Discussion

VCDQ is dedicated to helping people make informed decisions on their downloads. In the style that VCDQ is known for, all releases can be discussed in the forums (each rls gets its own thread). While you won’t be able to download anything directly from VCDQ (after all, it’s a legal indexing site), we’re fairly sure you already know where to find these releases :)

Custom RSS Feeds

By navigating the site categories and sub-cats, viewers are able to create fully customizable RSS feeds based upon chosen filters. This can also be applied to the criteria listed on the main release page - Format (XviD, 720p), Source (CAM, DVDRip) and even by a specific Release Group (all of which can be filtered on the site, as well as in an RSS feed). To do this, simply select your "filters" and click the RSS.xml link found on the right side of the page.

User Submissions

VCDQ accepts moderated user submissions. Readers are able to submit new releases (movies & games) not found on site. In reference to movies, this should be used mostly for P2P releases.

New ‘Games’ Category

Known traditionally as a movie & TV-rip indexer, VCDQ has recently added three spiffy new games categories (for PC & Console ISOs only). Again, releases in this section can be filtered by group (RELOADED, SKIDROW), by source (NTSC/PAL, RF) and used in RSS feeds.

Our Take on the New VCDQ.com

All in all, a great effort so far from the team behind the new VCDQ.com. They had to launch early as the old site/server died "a death of a thousand cuts". As a result they lost almost 9 months of forum and release data (although they’re backfilling the releases slowly). Better to launch a tad early, rather than stare at a blank place-holder for the next two months I reckon. The filtering system and search system is still a little clunky as they’ve yet to iron-out every last kink in the site, but so far it’s mostly been a smooth transition.

One thing that’s always stood out about VCDQ is the community involvement. Releases are actually discussed by real members in the forums. Unlike trackers, you won’t have to say "thanks uploader!" and other mindless drivel - feel free to write your own honest opinion about the quality of a release, or express how awesome/shitty that new movie is - without the fear of a banhammer or site warning.
