This guide is about how to change file names and still keep seeding. It works the same way no matter which OS you’re on.
If you use Azureus/Vuze (the 3.x series), you need to change to “classic” view: in Vuze, click the “Advanced” button top right. Also, you need to be in at least “Intermediate” mode: change by going to “Tools -> Options -> Mode” and check “Intermediate” (or “Advanced”).
It is possible to change file (and folder) names because they are not really parts of the files. They are like “labels” that tell the computer where to find the content of the files. You can not change the tags for music files and keep seeding. The tags are part of the files (headers), and changing them will make the files fail the hash check in your torrent client.
Rename files from within Azureus
1. Go to “Options –> Interface –> Display” and check “Show separate ‘Rename’ and ‘Retarget’ options in File”.
2. Back in the main pane, right-click the torrent and choose “Show Details”, then click the “Files” tab.
3. Right-click one file at a time, change its name and click OK.
4. When you’re done, return to the main pane, right-click the torrent and choose “Queue” (or “Force Start” if you want to make sure the torrent does not get queued).
Retarget files that have been renamed outside of Azureus
Sometimes it is easier to change file names outside of Azureus, for example if you batch rename files in order to replace underscores with spaces, etc. After such changes, you need to retarget the files in Azureus if you want to keep seeding the torrent. The procedure for doing this is the same no matter if the torrent is already loaded in Azureus, or if you add it as a new torrent.

1. If the torrent is already loaded in Azureus, right-click it and choose “Stop” (if it is not already stopped). If you are adding a new torrent with changed file names, choose “Stopped” add mode.
2. Go to “Options –> Interface –> Display” and uncheck “Show separate ‘Rename’ and ‘Retarget’ options in File” (or make sure it is not checked).
3. Right-click the torrent and choose “Show Details”, then click the “Files” tab.
4. Right-click a file and choose “Rename or Retarget”. (You can select more than one file by using Shift+arrow key before right-clicking, then a new dialogue box will pop up for each file in succession.)
5. Optional: If you have also changed the folder name, or moved the folder, you need to browse to the right folder. When you are in the right folder, simply click the new file name for the file, then click “Save”. Be careful that you really choose the right file: sometimes Azureus and Explorer (or the equivalent for Mac or Linux) show the files in different order.
6. When you’re done, return to the main pane, right-click the torrent and choose “Force Re-Check”. The torrent should check out to 100% and move to the completed torrents pane (if it was not already there) if you have got it all right.
7. Right-click the torrent and choose “Queue” (or “Force Start” if you want to make sure the torrent does not get queued).
